Ralph Breaks the Internet is finally here, and although we didn’t have to wait for it as long as Incredibles or Finding Nemo sequels, we have been very excited for this movie since it was first announced!
I loved everything about the original Wreck-It Ralph. The soundtrack is still one of my favorites and the whole ” inside the video game world” concept was fun and intriguing. I was ready to go back and explore more, but I’m always a little nervous that the sequel won’t be as good as the original.
But fears and expectations aside, let’s talk about Ralph Breaks the Internet. And answer the big question–Is Ralph Breaks the Internet worth the money to see in the theater?
I’ll be giving you as complete a review as possible with some mild spoilers.
What’s Happening in the Movie?
We begin the movie by catching up on what Ralph and Vanelope have been up to since we last saw them. They work in their games all day while the arcade is open, and then at night, they head to Game Central Station for a little fun.
They hop from game to game, laugh over a root beer at Tappers, watch the sunrise together, and then start it all over again. Ralph is living his dream of doing nothing with his best friend, but Vanelope is wondering if there isn’t more than racing the same few tracks every day.
Ralph wants to make his best friend happy, but goes too far as usual, and breaks Sugar Rush in the process. If Vanelope wants to save her game from being shut down, she has only one choice…the Internet! And ya know, Ralph isn’t going to let her go alone.
The Good, the Bad, and the Dangerous
Here’s we get down to the nitty-gritty of what worked and what didn’t. I’ll cover anything I loved about the movie, anything that I could have done without, and anything that I think you should be aware of before going to see it yourself.
I absolutely loved all the background stuff in this movie. If you’ve seen the trailers, you’ve probably noticed all the companies and characters they’ve included in the movie. It’s going to take many rewatches to catch it all. My favorite cameo was Stan Lee. It’s only for a second but seemed so timely.
The humor in this film was pretty great. I’m generally not a “laugh out loud” kind of person, probably due to how nerdy my laugh is, but this movie got to me a few times. I was surprised by how many of the jokes were intended for the grownups in the audience. They weren’t inappropriate for kids just over their heads. Think things like spam puns, company references, and things like that. The farthest they went towards adult humor was Vanelope reading a sign with Lingerie on it, but she mispronounces it so most kids probably wouldn’t catch it.
There is also a fair amount of potty humor similar in tone to the first Wreck it Ralph, but it was mild and not too drawn out.
Overall Ralph Breaks the Internet was just plain funny and I’ve already managed to incorporate several of the jokes into my everyday life.
After seeing the trailers, I was super excited about the princess scenes. They play a bigger part in the movie than I expected for which I was very happy. Not to mention, I need Disney to sell their pajamas. I would be first in line for the Rapunzel set.
Venelope learns what being a princess usually entails. She tries her hand at becoming a true Disney princess complete with her very own song about her dreams coming…racing style of course!
Is Ralph Breaks the Internet as good as the Original?
So did it live up to my expectations? Yes, I think it did! Was it as good as the Wreck-It Ralph? No, I don’t think it was. While the humor and feels from the first one were there, it lost some of its charm when they left the arcade for the wonders of the Internet.
Overall, the story expanded the video game world and developed the characters. They were different at the end of the movie, and you got to see that progression making them even more lovable.
Is Ralph Breaks the Internet worth the money?
I am going to recommend going to see this movie. You’ll love trying to catch all the stuff in the background, have a good laugh, and enjoy following your favorite video game characters as they explore a whole new world (and break it a little).
Our whole family loved it and were engaged the whole time. I laughed a lot and although there were no tearjerker moments, I walked away with that warm, fuzzy feeling. It was a great way to spend a Friday morning.
Now it’s your turn. Have you seen the movie? What did you think of it? What was your favorite Easter Egg or cameo? Leave a comment and let us know!
