Want to know the right order to watch Marvel movies in? Start at the beginning and work through the movies in order and you’ll see superheros in a whole new way!
Why Marvel movies are worth watching in order
With Avengers Endgame quickly becoming the fastest grossing film of all time (watch your back Avatar), a whole new group of Marvel fans is being born.
So much of this movie couple only be appreciated if you had seen previous films and for that reason you need to know what order to watch Marvel movies in.
You see I met my husband shortly after the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and he’s been a believer since the beginning.
I on the other hand saw the movies sporadically for years and didn’t get what the big deal was. That was until Infinity War was announced.
We watched every single Marvel movie in chronological order, and I was hooked. I meant the over-arching story of these films is amazing!
Order to Watch Marvel Movies (Chronological)
- Captain America: The First Avenger
- Captain Marvel
- Iron Man
- Iron Man 2
- The Incredible Hulk
- Marvel’s The Avengers
- Iron Man 3
- Thor: The Dark World
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
- Avengers: Age of Ultron
- Captain America: Civil War
- Doctor Strange
- Black Panther
- Spider-Man: Homecoming
- Thor: Ragnarok
- Ant-Man and The Wasp
- Avengers: Infinity War
- Avengers: Endgame
Can you skip some movies?
Now in many movie franchises, there are movies I consider skippable. They either just don’t add anything to the universe or are just plain bad.
But with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), every movie is a must watch to get the full picture. Plus Marvel loves to reference itself so it’s really fun to catch all the Easter eggs.
The bare minimum
If you are just wanting to see enough to understand Endgame, you could just see Infinity War and at least follow the current story. It would be better to at least watch all the Avengers movies and Captain America: Civil War.
What Marvel movies are missing from this list?
You may have noticed that some Marvel Movie like Spider-Man and the X-Men aren’t on the list. That’s because they were produced by different studios and aren’t part of the MCU, at least not yet.
They could be brought in at some point, but like Spider-Man, their stories will probably be rewritten to suit this universe and timeline..
I hear time travel is a thing in Marvel
Speaking of timelines, we need to talk about how time works in these movies. When a character travels through time and changes the past, it doesn’t change the present.
Instead, it creates a branch in time or a separate timeline. So 1 character could be living 2 parallel, but different lives at the same time.
This is common in the comics and it’s been introduced in the movies. It’s a hot topic among Marvel fans at the moment, and may have you wondering if it’s worth watching movies that may not matter anymore after someone on time travels.
But time travel doesn’t affect any of these movies. The characters past will not change. The new timelines will become part of their presents and futures.
