It was Christmas morning of 1994. I woke up thinking about presents and Santa, but when I ran to the living room, I found something amazing. Santa had left his footprints across the carpet. I now had undeniable proof that Santa was real!
Something as simple as my dad’s boots and some flour created a family memory that has stayed with me for over 20 years now. I loved it so much that I recreated for my own kids. But why does something as simple as making family memories feel so difficult sometimes?
Do family memories just happen?
As parents, we want to create that ideal childhood for our kids. The one filled with laughter, sunshine, and magic–the stuff memories are made of. But how do we do that? Do our days have to be filled with Pinterest-worthy projects?
It’s easy to think we need to plan the perfect vacation, throw elaborate parties, or have designer kids rooms for our kids to have magical childhoods, but here’s the secret. Making family memories are in
amily memories ideas
Although family memories do not need to be complicated or elaborate, we have to set the stage for moments that will become precious family memories. Here are a few ways to make some magic:
We love a good family tradition. My current favorite is Saturday Night Movie Night. Cuddling on the couch together at the end of the week watching a movie is something I will cherish for as long as I can. To get started, find an activity the whole family enjoys and set a regular time for it.
A family hobby gives everyone a shared interest, and we like to hang out with people who are interested in the same things as us. Our family hobby is Disney, but if Disney isn’t your thing, try hiking, video games, or even learning a new skill together. Start small and as your interest grows so will your hobby and time together.
Getting away as a family is a perfect time to make some family memories. Everyone’s relaxed and having fun together. Here at Chaos & Castles, I talk about how to plan Disney family vacations, but magical memories can be made anywhere. So go camping, drive across the country, or explore your hometown on a staycation.
Why making family memories is important
Strengthens the family
Shaun and I have been working at our church with teenagers for 7+ years. There is a marked difference between families that have fun together and those that don’t. Kids need to see both the serious and the silly side of their parents, and playing together
At first, you may be the only one coming up with ideas, but it won’t be long before the whole family has suggestions. Creativity is a muscle that has to be exercised. Kids will love coming up with crazy new ideas that will have the whole family laughing.
Makes a house a home
We can spend so much time organizing & decorating our houses that we forget to make it a home. Having fun as a family is what makes the difference. It creates space for your family to escape and relax.
The key to it all
The key to making family memories magical is to start small and simple. If you want to start a family movie night, don’t go crazy with themed food, decorations, and after-movie discussions. Instead, order a pizza, pop in a Blu-ray, and let it grow from there.
Look at your calendar and set aside 1-2 hours this month. Plan something special for your family. Get ideas from them. If you’re new to this, it may not seem natural at first, but you’ll get there.
Let’s learn from each other. Leave a comment sharing how your family makes magical memories! And come an meet our little family on our About Page.
