It’s probably safe to say that everyone has a dream. Some might say it’s to be rich or to travel or live some place exotic, but I don’t think those are actually our dreams. They are representations of our true dreams. What we really want is to be secure, or free, or content.
One year ago, I had a dream. It was simple. I wanted to move to my dream city of Orlando, Florida, spend my days working from home, homeschool my kids, make delicious meals, have a beautiful home, and connect with God in the way I long for.
The problem was that dream seemed impossible. One year ago, I had no job at all. We were scraping by on my husband’s income and moving to more expensive city from our country home was crazy. I did homeschool my kids, but our days ended in tears or in giving up more often than not. I tried to cook, but meals always felt complicated and lackluster, and we ended up eating out more often than I care to admit.
And then there was my relationship with God. That was just a cycle of guilt, emptiness, and frustration. I dreaded going to church. My ministries fill me with anxiety rather than joy. What was even the point?
Then the changes began to come quick. Within a month, I had not 1 but 2 jobs that allowed me to stay home with my kids. The extra income and lack of time made me start simplifying other areas of my life like homeshcooling and meals. It became easier to get more done.
Within 9 months, we had moved to Florida. For the first time in my life, I was free to choose which church I would attend. From the first message, I knew I was home. Although my relationship with God is still “complicated”, I’m not weighed down by it. In fact, I’m rediscovering myself and my spirituality every day.
Here is the big lessons I have learned:
- Boiling down our dreams to the motive behind them reveals that our dreams are often within reach.
- Making life more complicated rarely helps anything. Simple is usually best.
- Learning to just do the next right step allows room for God to work the impossible.
Let me ask you what your dream is? Don’t hold back. What does that dream represent to you? Security, freedom, peace, contentment, confidence? Write it down. That’s the first step. You’ve already begun your journey to your dream life- the easy way.
